Music of the World: A Brief Intro

Dr. John Owens

Music of the World

In every culture on earth, music is an essential part of people’s identity. While various types of music are culturally unique, the idea and ever-presence of music is a shared concept and experience in many ways, which makes music both divergent and ubiquitous. While music is found just about everywhere, it is not necessarily understood by all, as it is informed by distinct customs, traditions, and values.

The purpose of this collection of world music resources is to provide insight and provoke questions about musical traditions that can be found throughout the globe. The selected chapters in this collection are derived from a variety of Open Educational Resources. Most importantly they will serve as a starting point for class discussions about Music of the World.
