May Holidays in Russia

Vera Demidova

In Russia, the May holidays are some of the most enjoyable days of the year. They include Labor Day on May 1st and Victory Day on May 9th. Although these holidays have historical and political importance, people appreciate them mostly because of the long break from work and school. Families and friends often use this time to go outside, enjoy nature, and have barbecues. One of the most popular traditions is cooking shashlik, which is a type of grilled meat. The smell of fresh meat on the fire and the warm spring air create a special atmosphere. Since these holidays are not celebrated in the U.S., Russian people living there focus on other important holidays like Thanksgiving and Independence Day. Even though the celebrations are different, the feeling of spending time with family and enjoying good food is the same. The May holidays in Russia bring joy, relaxation, and the pleasure of outdoor gatherings.
