My Arrival in the United States

Escarlett Alvarez

My arrival in the United States was a wonderful experience. I was very excited, but at the same time, I was very uncertain about whether I would be able to integrate into a culture so different from my own. Furthermore, my English was very limited. I arrived in this country alone. My family stayed in Chile. My plan was to come only for a short time, to live with friends in Kenmore. I arrived at the Seattle airport and my friends were waiting for me. The first few days they showed me the city, the tourist spots, and we went to different types of
restaurants. After a few days, I started working in a deli as a cook. I’ve always loved cooking, and here I had the opportunity to develop that skill. It wasn’t hard to get used to this country seemed very orderly, clean, and with beautiful nature. However, a part of me always misses my home country. Eventually I decided to stay here for a while, learn the language, and take advantage of the opportunity I’ had been given. I can say that this whole experience has been one of the greatest learning experiences in my 53 years. I treasure this experience as one of the best times of my life, and I’ll carry it with me forever. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be here. I’m considering a possible return, although I haven’t set a date yet. However, I’ll try to make the most of my remaining time, because I’m sure I’ll miss this wonderful country and its people a lot when I return to my beloved Chile.
