My Education Experience

Viktoriia Poklonska

I was a student at school in Ukraine. I studied there for 10 years. When I graduated, the school program lasted 10 years, but now students are required to study for 12 years. My school was conventionally divided into middle and high schools. In middle school, students usually had one main teacher, while in high school, they had different teachers. In middle school, wearing a school uniform was mandatory, but in high school it wasn’t a strict rule. Usually middle and high classes had between 30 and 40 students. However, many students in the 8th or 9th drade left to attend college, so class sizes decreased over time. Classrooms often had three rows of desks, and students sat in pairs because there were many students. Teachers were usually addressed by their first name followed by a middle name, but many younger students often couldn’t pronounce the middle name correctly, which was funny. My native region has many colleges, including medical, legal, and space technology, because my city has a developing space industry. There are also general colleges. Education in public schools is free, but colleges and universities require tuition. Still tuition fees in Ukraine are much lower than in the U.S. After finishing school and colleges students can enter universities. University education is popular in Ukraine, so most students pursue higher education. In my opinion, the quality of teaching Ukrainians school and college is very good. However, teaching in Ukrainians university is worse than in the U.S. because there is time or opportunity for the practical application of knowledge due to a lack of funding. That’s why many students want to study abroad. I hope that after the war ends, this problem will be resolved.
