HOLY WEEK IN COLOMBIA

William V.

Holy Week is a religious celebration observed in many Latin American countries. In particular, in Colombia, it is famous for its tradition. Holy Week is celebrated at the end of March or the beginning of April, each year there are different dates. The belief that is celebrated during Holy Week is the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a time of reflection and penitence for Christian believers. The celebration consists of religious processions that go through the streets of the city. The participants are neighbors of the city who carry large crosses or images that represent scenes from the Passion of Christ. It is also a time to enjoy family. My family usually meets in a home and each day a family offers a special dish, by tradition we do not eat meat, but the dishes are based on chicken and preferably fish. Everyone helps to cook and we enjoy time as a family, particularly on Holy Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Holy Week ends with the celebration of Easter Sunday, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. In resume, these festivities are, for me, the best time of the year to share with family and celebrate with tradition and I always recommend spend this special time together.
