New Year
George Starodubstev
Every year, I look forward to celebrating New Year since it’s such a special holiday. The New Year is the time or day at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar’s year count increments by one. In Russia, we start celebrating the New Year on December 31. In fact, the celebration of the New Year is 1 night, but in Russia we have 10 days off. I think this is because in Russia many people like to drink, and then they have hangovers. Usually New Year is celebrated with family at home from 9pm until 12 and then small kids go to sleep. However teenagers and adults celebrate all night. At 00:00 fireworks start. There are large fireworks on the central square and small fireworks near every house. When small kids go to sleep, their parents put gifts under the Christmas tree. Additionaly, New Year is special for cooking delicious food like a “Oliver Salad”, “herring under a fur coat” and others. Also, mandarin oranges are a symbol of New Year in Russia. Then, on the second day of celebrations, winter activities start, such as some of my favorite days in Russia. Snow tubing, skiing, and others. In summary, New Year celebrations are some of my favorite days in Russia.
