A few news articles from the NYT will be assigned. As a Cascadia student you may access these using the campus library’s portal to the NYTimes. You will need to have your UWnetID activated. You may need to search for the appropriate article by title, author, or date. (Otherwise, you may use up the limited number of free article views that the newspaper provides viewers.) |

Online computing access

In this online class, you will need regular, daily access to a computing device (desktop or laptop computer or tablet or smartphone*), and to reliable wifi, at your home or wherever you intend to complete this course. You are not expected to come on campus (nor may you without following the Covid protocols), but you may want to, in order to access wifi.
*Note: By itself, a smart mobile phone will not be sufficient for completing the course. Students read and think more deeply and write better when they are using a larger device. A smartphone also does not work well for submitting homework in Canvas. A smartphone may be useful, however, for taking images for some assignments, for checking in to prepare yourself for work online, and for other online applications that we are going to try out in this class. So, use your smartphone, but have a laptop or larger device too.

You will be using Canvas, our learning management system To access Canvas effectively, you should use a browser that is compatible: we recommend either Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari. If you run into challenges with Canvas, at any time, you may seek technical help for Canvas: elhelp@cascada.edu and you can also ask for a Canvas tutorial. For attending Instructor/Student visiting hours on Zoom, you may use a laptop or mobile phone.

You will be setting up your Cascadia network account, and a UW NetID account for the library. The Cascadia network account will help you get access to the computers on campus (and wifi!) to check email, get on Canvas, and complete work for this course, and you need it before you can set up the UW NetID. You can set up the Cascadia network account and UWNetID now: Go to the Cascadia College website, Student toolbox.
