4 About Your Instructor

portrait

Hi there!

I like to be called Dr. Tuominen or Professor Tuominen (pronounced TWOH-mee-nen, like this: pronunciation)

I am flexible about pronouns, and suggest she/they.

I am a Sociology professor by training and also an instructional designer (that means I help design courses).  I have taught COLL101 for many years:  it’s one of my favorite classes to teach, and I wish I had had a COLL101 course available to me when I started college. My college degrees are from UW: I graduated with a double major Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Scandinavia Area Studies, and my Master’s and Ph.D. degrees are in Sociology.

You might like to know that I’m multilingual (English, Finnish, French, some German and Estonian).  I am an immigrant. I have twin sons and a partner, and a rescue dog named Aria. I enjoy dipping in cold water year round, eating fancy food, and reading.

See my Welcome video in our course on Canvas in the Getting Started folder.

To contact me:

  • Email me via Canvas mail inbox, especially for class-related thing. I try to respond within 48 hours. (For other matters, you may use atuominen@cascadia.edu)

  • Visit me during Instructor/student visiting hours, which will be remote via Zoom: see our Canvas site for the set times and the  Zoom link.  You are welcome to schedule an appointment with me outside of the set visiting hour times if you’d like to meet me in Zoom at another time.  Or, you may send me Canvas mail anytime, using the Canvas inbox within our course site.
