13 Who Decides What Art Means? (2025)

Jennifer Emswiler

This is a video that I have in my final module for the quarter:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoXyw909Qu0.https://youtube.com/watch?v=HoXyw909Qu0%3Fautoplay%3D1%26rel%3D0%26hl%3Den_US%26fs%3D1

I like this video because we begin our quarter with critical thinking and visual literacy and apply how we can approach art both analytically as well as emotionally without shutting it down or experiencing it apathetically. We talk about how everyone likes and appreciates different things, and how that cultural experience can add to our experiences in viewing art. They are urged to always explain why they like something AND why they dislike something. Being able to concisely explain these feelings out loud really helps my students to open their minds to things like the artist’s intent, techniques, styles, context, and culture. In the end they may not like the artwork, but they can appreciate its relevance and learn a little more about themselves. Ending with this video gives them a way to continue their own assessments while still asking important questions. It allows the viewer to understand that there is more than one way to look at, discuss, and experience art and it can be personal.
