16 Social Determinants of Health in A Nursing Course (2025)

I take the time in my health assessment course to explain and discuss Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) with my students. We analyze how different populations have varied health outcomes based on the privileges and inequities created by our society over time. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to nurses and nursing students to try and manage these inequities that we see our patients endure. Numerous academic journal articles address this and give nurses specific ways and resources they can utilize to help their patients who have a higher risk of lowered health outcomes.
