22 Health Insurance and Social Privilege (2025)

Serena Mahran

In the medical field, we often discuss the importance of insurance—what it is and what it does for individuals—but we don’t always talk about the privileges it can provide. Insurance isn’t just a safety net; it can offer access to better care, better equipment, and even a more personalized experience in a physician’s office.

I really recommend this TED Talkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysea-nu51Ss—It explores the idea of privilege from the perspective of one’s own world and how insurance can shape the healthcare experience. For example, individuals with good insurance may have access to more advanced treatments or quicker appointments, things that can make a big difference in their overall care.

Healthcare professionals need to recognize that patients come from diverse social and economic backgrounds, and insurance often plays a significant role in shaping the care they receive. Understanding these differences can help providers offer more equitable and compassionate care.

Privilege reaches everyone differently.
