Current English Courses at Bates
Bates currently offers the following progression of English courses.
ENGL 90
ENGL 91
ENGL 175
ENGL 98 + ENGL& 101, Co-requisite
ENGL& 101
ENGL& 101 is a general education requirement for a number of Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. It is possible to place directly into ENGL& 101 or to place into one of the preparatory courses (ENGL 90 or ENGL 91) which are intended to develop the skills needed to succeed in ENGL& 101.
ENGL 98 + ENGL& 101 is our co-requisite option that pairs ENGL& 101 with a two-credit support course (ENGL 98). It is intended to support students who are nearly ready to take English 101 and may need some additional support but not an entire English 91 course.
ENGL 175 satisfies the English general education requirement for certain degree programs.
You can review the list of programs on the ENGL 175 page in this toolkit and/or check with your advisor to see if the ENGL 175 course is accepted by your program.
Placement into any one of these courses should depend on your self-assessment of your current knowledge and skills so that the placement both challenges learning and best supports your success.
In the next few pages of this guided self-placement toolkit, you will be introduced to the common expectations for each of these course options. Please read through these pages thoughtfully and carefully consider your answers to questions we ask along the way.
Once you have reviewed the information about our English courses, you will be directed to complete a self-placement questionnaire, and meet with your advisor, as the last steps in the process.
