professionalism is the adherence to a set of behavioral standards characterized by elements such as attitude, accountability, and respect in one’s work or interactions. Professional conduct would include following the employer’s policies and guidelines for expected behaviors such as being on time, fulfilling work duties efficiently, and managing patient information appropriately. Another way to consider professionalism is to consider it the practice of devoting your energy and attention to your profession while at work. This can take the form of sharing the same goals as patients and their families, such as helping them recover or restore health. Another potential aim of professionalism as a practice is to carry out the mission of the organization, such as offering justice, compassion, and equitable care for all people.

To achieve a level of professionalism that makes a lasting impact on patients, individuals might find that they need to incorporate certain values and traits into their work. These might include being trustworthy, respectful, accountable, responsible, and service-oriented. A professional also needs to practice personal values and ethical behavior such as integrity and self-regulation. To a healthcare worker this means doing what is right because it makes a difference to the patient, not because someone is watching or holding you accountable. Other desirable traits are taking initiative and being self-motivated. Look for things to do, ways to help your team, research information or check policies before asking questions so you are well informed. Your behavior should reflect well on yourself, your team, your organization, and your profession.
