Chapter 2: Settings Where Healthcare is Delivered
Overview
Landau (They/Them) is 24-years old and has worked in retail – customer service for the last 6 years. They are in the very early stages of researching healthcare careers. Landau is currently exploring the various settings where healthcare is provided. The places that come to their mind are hospitals and clinics, but they are certain that there are many other settings that they have not been exposed to.
Healthcare can be provided in a variety of settings. When most people think about where they go to receive healthcare, the most common places are the hospital and their doctors office. In this chapter we will explore the major settings that healthcare can be delivered. These settings include the following: acute care hospitals, urgent care, long-term care facilities, outpatient service centers.
Objectives
Upon completion of this chapter, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the settings where healthcare is delivered.
- Differentiate between the major settings where healthcare is delivered.
- Explain why Healthcare is provided in different settings
- Distinguish between the type of care that is provided in an acute care hospital and the care provided in outpatient service centers.
