We Have the Ability

Prisca Mbumay

My trip from Burundi to the United States was the best trip that I ever had.  I was 24 years old and we came with my son, my older brother and a fun family.  I wore my beautiful pink dress, and I was so, so beautiful that day with my new shoes in white.  Before starting the trip, some HCR agents told us that it was going to be a long trip, and we had to be strong.  Because everything was going to be new and the airports were so big, we needed to be careful.

They gave us some documents with a bag with OIM on it, and we needed to keep it very safe because it  had all our information and identity in it.  And then, when we started our trip, I was nervous because it was my dream to come to the United States, so I could get a nice job and study to achieve my goals.

We got to the Burundi airport and we met with families, friends and coworkers.  They came to say goodbye to us because they didn’t know when we would meet again.  I was crying and happy at the same time.  When we got on the plane, I was so, so happy, and a little bit scared because it had been a long time since I took a flight.

When we got to Ethiopia, we took another flight from Ethiopia to the United States.  We passed the security, removed our shoes, put everything in the bins and passed through the x-ray.  We took that flight and came to the United States.  It was the longest flight that I ever had, but it was so, so amazing.  I loved the food on the plane. It was so delicious.

We got here and my big dream was completed.  I always thank God for everything and for giving us this opportunity to get here.
