Learning a language takes a very long time, and it can take longer when you are an adult with many responsibilities. When I arrived here, I didn’t even know anything about the English language. In my home country I used to be a student in high school. I studied until the 11th grade without an English teacher. There were a lot of English classes; however , they weren’t free. That’s why I didn’t know English. I got married when I was in 11th grade of high school. After three months , my husband and I came to the U.S in November 2017. In the first year , I started studying English in an Iraqi canter which is located in Kent. I had very difficult times in that class. For instance; when the teacher talked to me I never understood her and I was confused about what she said. In 2018, I got pregnant with my oldest daughter , and I left the class for 8 months because my oldest daughter was born in 7 months. After her birth, we moved from Kent to Des Moines and I started ESL class Highline College in level 1. So, in 2019 I got my second pregnancy and I lost my baby then I left again.
As you can see, I left the ESL class in 2020 again because I visited my home country for three months. When I came back , I got COVID-19 and I couldn’t continue my class. In 2022 , I started ESL class again and I worked hard to improve my English language. finally, I’m in level ⅘ right now and I try my best to improve my English skills with my to kids at home. These were the reasons that I didn’t improve my English language in these five years.
On the other hand, learning English is the most difficult for me because I have two children. On September/19/2022 , I found out that my oldest daughter’s name is Tara. She is diagnosed with autism. In fact, from the day she was born I have felt depressed and uncomfortable. I don’t have time to practice my English language at home because I’m searching for (ABA therapy) for her. Everyday at 8:00am I drop her off at preschool, and I come back to clean up my home. Then my class starts at 10:00 am. I study until 11:50, then I go to pack her up from school. However, during this time everything that I learned English in the past four years I forgot because of my daughter’s anxiety.
In additionally; I tried so hard to improve my English langeuge and to be successful. I was thinking that everything comes by the time. laterly I understood that I was wrong. Time went by fast and it looked like a dream. For instance; I remember that I was in level 2 and my teacher was Stive. He always helped me and advised me to never give up. It doesn’t matter what kind of problem you have. He said I know a lot of women who have children, work and they came for study too. So You can do too and I inspired him. Since 2020 , I have had three surgeries with general anesthesia because of them my memory was weak. Before, I was learning 50 words a day and I practiced it at night either. Then after a week I forgot how to spill it. I was upset and crying about why I forgot everything that I learned. After a while , I started learning 10-15 words a day in a relaxing place. So, that helped me to improve a little. By the way, last year I was in Karin class in level 3 and she taught me how to write a paragraph. Then In level 4 , I was in Maurea Brown class. Also, she taught me how to improve your English skills. I didn’t have a friend to practice speaking English with. Finally, I worked hard, I downloaded some apps and I followed some English teachers on Social Media. Also, My listening was improved by watching American movies. In conclusion , I will try my best to improve my English because I want to pass my citizenship test and become an American citizen.
