Exploring the Key Literacies

Greg Bem

The five key literacies at Spokane Community College (SCC) include:

  1. Applied Content Literacy
  2. Communication Literacy
  3. Information Literacy
  4. Intercultural Literacy
  5. Quantitative Literacy

These literacies are intended to be global: any student attaining a degree at the college will become proficient in the skills associated with these literacies. As you review the website for the key literacies, consider them not only individually but as a collection. Where do these literacies resonate? Where do you think they show up in your course or program? It is essential to consider how you relate to each literacy and how each definition may or may not overlap with your own. SCC offers flexibility in not only considering but integrating the literacies, and provides autonomy and academic freedom in the connection of the literacies to academic programs and courses.

In this guide we will explore information literacy more directly.
