A Closer Examination: Information Literacy

Greg Bem

Let’s take a moment to reflect on SCC’s definition of information literacy (as a key literacy):

Students will develop knowledge and abilities allowing them to identify, locate, and evaluate information pertaining to the problem under consideration. Students will learn how to responsibly research, use, share, and produce accurate, relevant information gleaned through skilled research methods. (Winter 2024)

Consider the definition above and what it means for the type of information used or integrated into your curriculum. How is your curriculum unique? How does it overlap with other curricula at your school?

Begin with probing questions that might situate the large world of assessment and the large world of information literacy in your context. As you explore, take notes and identify questions you may have now, which may be answered throughout the rest of this book.
