With the verb aller, we will be using different prepositions depending on the context. Pay special attention to the following rules regarding which preposition to use in French. These will generally all translate as “to” in English.
- À (city, some islands) à Hawaï, à Cuba
- Au (country that ends in a consonant or any vowel other than “e;” any masculine place) au café, au Maroc, au Congo
Exception: au Mexique - À la (feminine place, not a country) à la bibliothèque
- Aux (plural, including countries that have a plural name) aux États-Unis, aux Philippines
- En (continents and countries that end in an “e” or start with a vowel or an “h”) en France, en Afrique
- Dans le (some less-known states or when using the word “state”) dans le Montana, dans l’État de…
