15 Chapter Introduction & Pre-Chapter Activity: Chapter 9

Before beginning this chapter, it is important to recognize which skills and tasks you will be expected to learn to perform. Do you already have some previous skills or knowledge in these areas that you can use to your advantage? Are there any topics that you foresee being difficult?

After completing this chapter, I will be able to:

• Talk about what has just happened in the immediate past.
• Apply knowledge of geography and vocabulary relating to nationality to talk about myself and the peoples of the French-speaking world.
• Learn to use the correct pronouns with various countries and states and how to say “in,” “to,” and “from” when talking about origin, travel, and vacation.
• Differentiate the meanings of the adverbs très, beaucoup, and

  souvent and use them appropriately in conversation.

• Give positive and negative commands to say what you want people to do or not do.
• Use adjectives that have multiple meanings correctly in context after learning proper placement.
• Prepare for international travel.

Pre-chapter activity

Pre-activity: An important part of this chapter involves describing vacations and talking about different places in the world. In this activity, you will interpret the paragraph below that describes the last time the author went on vacation. Follow the steps below to describe the last time you went on vacation.

Michel :

L’été passé, je suis allé à Boston pour rendre visite à mon ami Andrew. Je suis de Cartagena en Colombie, et il y a des vols directs pour Boston deux fois par semaine. J’ai passé une semaine à Boston, et j’ai fait beaucoup de choses. Pendant que mon ami travaillait, je suis allé au Musée d’Histoire Naturelle de Harvard, où j’ai vu le squelette d’un reptile marin préhistorique, qui est long de 13 mètres (plus de quarante pieds). Je suis passionné d’histoire, alors j’ai parcouru tout le chemin de la liberté, et je suis passé par Boston Common et par le navire USS Constitution. Andrew ne travaille pas le samedi, donc nous sommes allés au match des Red Sox et j’ai mangé de la nourriture typique pour un match de base-ball aux États-Unis: un hot dog, du popcorn, et de la barbe à papa (cotton candy).
