22 L’impératif: Affirmative Commands

Affirmative commands are used for telling a person to do something. There are three forms: tu, vous, and

nous. As in English, we leave off the subject pronoun when we get bossy.

(You) Take off your hat. (You all) Close the door.

The nous form in French also drops the subject pronoun, but does not require the “let’s” that we see in English.

Let’s play a game of basketball.

To form an affirmative command for -ER verbs:

• Use the present tense conjugation for vous and nous—simply drop the subject pronoun.

  Dansez ! Jouez ! Allez au parc ! Dansons ! Jouons ! Allons au parc !

• Use the present tense conjugation for tu, drop the subject pronoun, and drop the “s”

  Danse ! Joue ! Va au parc ! Parle-moi de ça.

• …unless the command is followed directly by y or en.

  Vas-y ! Achètes-en. Manges-en.

  To form an affirmative command for -RE verbs:

• Use the present tense conjugation, dropping the subject pronoun.

Prends-en un peu ! Prenez-en un peu ! Prenons-en un peu ! Descends du bus ici. Vendez tout ! Buvons à la santé des mariés.

Think back! To form an affirmative command for -IR verbs: Remember that -IR verbs have different categories of regular conjugations in the present. These differences impact how they function in the imperative:

• • -IR verbs that conjugate like -ER verbs drop the “s”in the tu form

    Ouvre la porte ! Offre-lui du chocolat.

  • All other -IR verbs simply use the present tense conjugation and drop the subject pronoun

The following chart will give you some examples of what different verbs will look like in their command forms. Note that adverbial pronouns, CODs, COIs, and emphatic pronouns are attached directly to the end of a command with a hypen, un trait d’union also called un petit tiret. To form a pronominal affirmative command, use toi, vous, and nous attached to the end of the command. We use the emphatic pronouns moi and toi instead of me or te in affirmative commands as in the following example phrase: Parle-moi correctement. When we get into negative commands, we will see our regular word order where pronouns come before the verb.
