23 L’impératif: Negative Commands

Negative commands are used for telling a person NOT to do something. There are three forms: tu, vous, and nous. As in English, we leave off the subject pronoun when we get bossy. However, French will not require the use of “don’t” and will instead simply use ne…pas/jamais/rien for negation.
(You) Don’t take off your hat. (You all) Don’t close the door.
The nous form in French also drops the subject pronoun, but does not require the “let’s” that we see in English.
Let’s not play a game of basketball.
To form a negative command for -ER verbs:
- Use the present tense conjugation for vous and nous—simply drop the subject pronoun. Ne dansez pas ! Ne jouez pas ! N’allez jamais au parc !
Ne dansons pas ! Ne jouons pas ! N’allons pas au parc !
- Use the present tense conjugation for tu, drop the subject pronoun, and drop the “s” Ne danse pas ! Ne joue pas ici ! Ne va jamais tout.e seul.e au parc !
- …even when the command is preceeded directly by y or en; that is simply for pronunciation purposes in the affirmative to avoid a dual vowel sound when y or en is attached
N’y va pas ! Ne m’en achète rien. N’en mange jamais. Ne parle à personne.
To form an affirmative command for all other verbs (with the exception of four irregulars):
- Use the present tense conjugation, dropping the subject pronoun. Ne venez pas ici. Ne viens pas ici.
N’en prenez pas ! N’en prenons pas. N’en prends pas.
Note that reflexive pronouns, adverbial pronouns, CODs, and COIs are used in their regular word order and emphatic pronouns
are no longer used, except for after prepositions. ne

Using formal commands since an unknown reader should be treated as vous. Make five recommendations for living a longer life. Be prepared to share and discuss your recommendations with a partner and the class. Rest and relaxation matters, too! Think about encouraging your readers to check out some vacation destinations and how they can reduce stress in their travels or even on their daily commutes.

L’instigateur.rice versus la voix de la raison. In a group of friends, there always seems to be one friend who has all sorts of exciting ideas (or terrible ideas… it’s a fine line!). There also always seems to be a friend who serves as the voice of reason. In this scenario, your instigator friend will tell you to do something, and your voice-of-reason friend will tell you not to do it. You are caught in the middle. For each activity, write “Je le ferais” or “Je ne le ferais pas” to say if you would or would not do it. If you have time, say why or why not.
