34 Le futur

The future tense is used to discuss what will happen in the future. It tends to be used:

• • for future events that are still fairly distant or still in the works
  • in polite, formal requests

For the near future or very certain events, le futur proche (the aller + infinitif expression) is more commonly used.

Examples using le futur:

L’année qui vient, j’irai en France. (More Certain: L’année qui vient, je vais aller en France.) Le mois prochain, vous n’assisterez pas aux cours.

Dans quelques années, tu auras plusieurs enfants.

Cet été, mon mari et moi, nous irons à Haïti. (More Certain: Cet été, nous allons aller à Haïti.) Je vous demanderai de ne pas parler avant que je termine de parler.

We DO NOT use it to ask people to do something for us like the English phrase, “Will you…” Est-ce

que tu m’aideras avec …? Instead, use vouloir or pouvoir with an infinitive: Est-ce que tu veux m’aider avec mes devoirs?/Est-ce que tu peux m’aider avec mes devoirs?

While there are some irregulars that will take extra effort, the future is one of the simplest tenses to conjugate. To form le futur, add these endings onto the end of your infinitive. Note: -RE verbs drop the final “e” from the infinitive to form the stem, as all stems for future end in “r.”

The future tense is also used in “si clauses” where something will happen if a condition is met. In these instances, le futur is used in one clause and le présent is used in the other.

Si tu pratiques, tu parleras bien français. Tu parleras bien français si tu pratiques.

Si j’ai le temps, je te téléphonerai. Je te téléphonerai si j’ai le temps.

Irregular Stems

And, as always, there are several irregular verbs in le futur. This group takes a new stem, but utilizes the same endings as regular verbs in the future.

Note: Stem-changing verbs have slight spelling differences

in the stem as well, but those are not our focus.

Quand sera la prochaine éclipse totale ?

Mathieu dit qu’il viendra à ta fête d’anniversaire.

Mes amis auront des jumeaux

en octobre.

La science-fiction. You have finally decided to write that science fiction novel you’ve been dreaming of all of these years. You know your character is going to fall into a lake that is used for secret government time travel research and he or she gets transported to the year 2222… now it’s time to imagine what the world will be like in approximately 200 years. Use le futur to brainstorm a list of ideas for your futuristic world. Be prepared to share with a partner and the class.

What will you stop doing (arrêter + de + infinitif)? What will you achieve? Be prepared to discuss with a partner and as a class. Then, write questions to interview your instructor about their plans for the future.
