Identifying What Belongs to Whom: C’est and ce sont
Exercice 1.17
Identifying What Belongs to Whom
We use c’est and ce sont in French to identify both items and people. When we are identifying something that is generic, we will use the articles indéfinis. With people, we just need their name.
When we want to add more detail that lets us know exactly which item we are talking about, we will use the articles définis. Oftentimes, we will also clarify who the item belongs to. In French, we cannot use the possessive “apostrophe s” as in “Marie’s” _____, but rather we say the ________ of Marie: le crayon de Marie.
