Le passé composé versus l’imparfait
Le passé composé versus l’imparfait is another one of the great battles in the French language. In this lesson, we will work on these together, to further solidify your understand of each tense. Keep in mind the role that time plays when deciding which tense is appropriate for a given situation.
Le passé composé is used to discuss:
- one-time occurrences
- interrupting actions
- actions that happened at a specific moment in time
- actions that occurred during a specific time period that is now over
Time expressions commonly used with le passé composé :
L’imparfait is used to discuss:
- recurring or habitual actions in the past (used to or would)
- ongoing actions in the past (was -ing)
- describe people, feelings, or situations (setting the scene)
- time, age, and weather in the past
