Before beginning this chapter, it is important to recognize which skills and tasks you will be expected to learn to perform. Do you already have some previous skills or knowledge in these areas that you can use to your advantage?  Are there any topics that you foresee  being difficult? If so, it is a good idea to pursue additional assistance to get ahead of any potential issues.  You are the master of your education—you have the power to take ownership of your learning!

After completing this chapter, I will be able to:

• Differentiate between the verbs savoir and connaître to discuss things that are known in different situations.
• Manipulate sentences to incorporate indirect object pronouns.
• Discuss common sports and hobbies that interest you and discover what others like to do in their free time.
• Use the subjunctive mood with que to impose will, make judgments, express opinions and emotions, and express uncertainty.
• Make recommendations and suggestions.
• Discuss wishes and desires one holds for others.
• Make comparisons of equality and inequality.
• Analyze a group of people or items and describe the extremes (ie. Tallest, shortest) using superlatives.

Pre-chapter activity

Pre-activity: An important part of this chapter involves describing your preferences and interests of sports and hobbies. In this activity, you will interpret each of the paragraphs below that describe the preferences and interests of two people. Follow the steps outlined below to discuss your own preferences and interests.

Aurore :

Le monde me fascine. Connaître les nouveaux pays m’intéresse beaucoup, et les langues étrangères m’intriguent. Les maths ne m’intéressent pas du tout. J’ai des amis qui aiment bien le foot, mais le foot ne m’intéresse pas beaucoup. Manger bien et suivre un régime sain sont deux choses qui m’importent beaucoup. J’adore faire la cuisine et je sais bien cuisiner! Normalement, je cuisine pour mon petit ami aussi, mais il étudie aux États-Unis pendant un an. Il me manque beaucoup.

André :

Je suis artiste et l’art me fascine. La musique me fascine aussi. J’aime bien la musique country et le rap. Je ne sais pas jouer d’un instrument, mais l’idée d’apprendre à jouer de la guitare ou du piano m’intéresse. Ni la batterie ni les instruments à vent ne m’intéressent beaucoup. La musique que j’aime n’intéresse pas mon mari. Le rock le fascine. Je connais toutes les chansons de rock des années 80. Le rock m’énerve. Nos préférences sont très différentes, mais on trouve un compromis.
