Two different Countries and Their Cultures

Diana Ainulova

What is the meaning of culture? The meaning of culture is the set of norms, behaviors, beliefs, customs, and values shared by the population of a sovereign nation. Since I am Armenian originally from Ukraine, I decided to compare Armenian and Ukrainian cultures. When one person belongs to two different cultures, it’s called biculturalism. Usually, that happens because your parents belong to different cultures or because you were raised in two different countries or moved from one country to another like me. Ukrainian and Armenian cultures have their similarities and differences.

Let’s start whit the similarities! Both cultures places importance on hospitality, family values, and celebrating traditions, such as Easter, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. For example, celebration of Christmas in Armenia and Ukraine begins whit the Holy Dinner on Christmas Eve. According to tradition, the whole family gathers at the festive table whit the appearance of the first star, which symbolizes the birth of Crist. Other similarities that most Armenians in Armenia are Christians (97%), approximately the same number (85%) of Ukrainians identified as Christians.

In addition, Ukrainian and Armenian foods are different. The most famous traditional Ukrainian dishes are borshch, varenyky, holubtsi and syrnyky, and Armenian traditional food is dolma, knorovats, lavash and harissa. These are completely different dishes in taste and method of preparation.

Ukrainian and Armenian languages are completely different.  Armenian is known to be hard language, and learning Armenian can be quite challenging for many people. However, if you know other languages like Greek, it can be a bit easier for you learn Armenian, because they are closely related. Ukrainian language is most closely related to Belarusian language, these two languages are similar in vocabulary.

Armenian and Ukrainian cultures are both beautiful and special, but Armenian culture has won my heart forever, whit its oldest traditions and foundations. It makes our world brighter and more beautiful, love for her was passed on to me from my ancestors and U hope that I can pass it to my heirs.
