Each year I celebrate the opportunity to represent student voices in our library collection at Lake Washington Institute of Technology. This book represents the 5th edition of combining the personal stories written by our upper level English level learners with images created by our art students. The stories and art give me hope and feel proud to be part of this engaged community of learners. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our incredible students.

Sharing a work of art created as an art student takes courage, particularly if the work of art is to appear in a publication. While learning the fundamentals of a visual arts language in my drawing classes this year, students could participate in this collaborative book project by submitting a piece of artwork. They responded personally to the themes described in students’ stories, themes about people they are close to, neighborhood spaces they see every day, and landscapes that hold a certain memory or importance. Developing the confidence to share one’s artwork takes time, and I hope students feel pride in their work and a connection to the students who took the same leap in sharing their writing in this book.
