1956 – Mae Jemison was born on October 17 in Alabama
1973 – Mae graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago
1977 – She went to Sandford University and received a degree in chemical engineering
1981 – Mae earned her medical degree from Cornell University
1982 – She joined the Peace Corps and traveled to Africa and Asia to help poor communities with medical needs
1985 – NASA recruits diverse candidates in their space program. Mae applied and got accepted.
1992 – After 6 years of training, Mae flew on the shuttle Endeavour with NASA and became the first African American woman in space
1993-98 – After NASA, Mae became an advocate for young kids, especially young women to get into STEM and space exploration. She founded two organizations to help children.
2012- She became the leader of the 100 Year Starship project.
Today – Mae Jemison lives in Houston, Texas continues to inspire kids and talk about the importance of education, science, and space!
