Mae Jemison’s Life Timeline

1956 – Mae Jemison was born on October 17 in Alabama

1973 – Mae graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago

1977 – She went to Standford University and received a degree in chemical engineering

1981 – Mae earned her medical degree from Cornell University

1982 – She joined the Peace Corps and traveled to Africa and Asia to help poor communities with medical needs

1985 – NASA recruits diverse candidates in their space program. Mae applied and got accepted.

1992 – After 5 years of training, Mae flew on the shuttle Endeavour with NASA and became the first African American woman in space

1993-98 – After NASA, Mae became an advocate for young kids, especially young women to get into STEM and space exploration. She received many awards for her tireless work in helping others and her dedication to succeed

Today – Mae Jemison lives in Houston, Texas continues to inspire kids and talk about the importance of education, science, and space!
