Appendix 2: Project Conclusion
Over the course of 18 months, the Antiracist Curriculum Review Initiative (ACI) focused its efforts on transforming English 101 (ENGL&101) to promote equity and success for all students. Guided by the state’s “Leading with Racial Equity” guidelines and the “Guided Pathways” framework, the ACI brought together a cohort of ENGL&101 instructors from all 34 community and technical colleges.
Key Activities:
- Faculty Professional Development: ACI participants engaged in intensive professional development focused on antiracist pedagogy, equitable assessment practices, and labor-based grading contracts.
- Curriculum Review and Revision: Each faculty member conducted a thorough antiracist review of their ENGL&101 course(s), implementing revisions designed to foster a more equitable and inclusive learning environment.
- Labor-Based Grading Pilot: The ACI piloted labor-based grading contracts in select ENGL&101 sections during the fall and winter quarters, assessing its impact on student engagement and performance.
Outcomes:
The ACI successfully:
- Built Capacity: Developed a statewide community of practice among ENGL&101 instructors committed to antiracist pedagogy and equitable assessment.
- Enhanced Curriculum: Revised ENGL&101 curricula to be more culturally responsive, inclusive, and aligned with student needs.
- Piloted Innovative Assessment: Explored the potential of labor-based grading to promote student effort, growth, and self-efficacy.
Conclusion:
The Antiracist Curriculum Review Initiative represented a significant step forward in the ongoing commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have equitable access to high-quality education. The insights and resources generated through the ACI will continue to inform and inspire efforts to create a more just and inclusive educational system across Washington State. The work of the ACI serves as a model for other disciplines and institutions seeking to advance racial equity in their curricula and instruction.
