8 Chapter 8- Encouragement and Support

Ruby had started school on November 14th and just a few weeks later it was time for Thanksgiving break. Ruby was happy for a short break from school. But she still felt stressed. The local store did not want her family’s business anymore because Ruby went to a white school. Ruby’s grandparents in Mississippi were scared for her family. They were afraid her father could be hurt by bad people.

Ruby’s father lost his mechanic job at the garage because Ruby went to a white school. But many people sent help. They sent money and gifts through the mail. People knew Ruby’s story from TV, magazines, and newspapers.

Ruby got many gifts. There were toys, books, and clothes. The gifts had Ruby’s name on them. Ruby thought all the gifts should be hers. But her mother said she must share with her brothers and sister. Not all gifts could be just for Ruby.

Even Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of a past president, wrote Ruby a note. Ruby’s mother liked this note the most.

In 1965, a big storm named Hurricane Betsy hit New Orleans. It was a very sad time. Ruby’s family lost many things in the flood, including Mrs. Roosevelt’s note and a special award Ruby’s father got for being brave in a war.

Regardless, Ruby’s family was thankful for the encouragement and support of other Americans.
