Welcome to CMST& 101 – Introduction to Communication

CMST& 101 provides an introduction to the study of communication, exploring its role in personal relationships, cultural interactions, small groups, and public speaking.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Foundations of Communication
    • Describe models of communication.
    • Define communication and its key components.
  2. Cultural Communication
    • Define and explain the five cultural dimensions that shape norms and values.
  3. Key Communication Skills
    • Identify the characteristics and functions of listening, language, and nonverbal communication.
  4. Group Communication
    • Describe the purpose of groups and categorize task, social, and dysfunctional roles.
  5. Public Speaking
    • Explain public speaking anxiety and recognize common fallacies that contribute to nervousness.
    • Prepare and deliver an Elevator Pitch speech emphasizing strengths and future career goals.

In this class, you will engage in self-assessment and reflection activities, apply critical thinking, and participate in discussions—both in small groups and larger audiences. The goal is to deepen your understanding of communication dynamics and make more intentional choices in how you communicate.
