Overview
This Module provides instructions and resources for students to complete a quarter-long Research Project on an issue affecting a marginalized community. The Module is introduced in the 4th week to coincide with Module 4 on Civil Rights. The following information provides an overview of the project, including a sample schedule and guidelines for students in selecting an issue and marginalized community.
Research & Writing Project
Theme: Social Justice & Equity
GETTING STARTED
Role-play:
• You are a student intern working for a government official.
• Your supervisor has asked you to research and write a report.
• The report will explore and propose solutions for an issue that has adversely affected,
and continues to affect, a marginalized group in the U.S.
Issue/Group selection [back in your classroom role] – 2 models, choose one:
• Select 3 different marginalized groups and an issue that affects each one, OR
• Select 1 marginalized group and 3 different issues that affect that group
[“Marginalized group” – a group of people that has experienced historical and/or
current injustice or inequitable treatment (e.g., based on race, gender, sexual orientation,
national origin, etc.) but have nonetheless battled back in an effort to achieve equal rights.]
Sample Schedule
The chart below shows the different steps students follow to complete the project, culminating in written and oral reports. More details about the requirements for each step are provided after the chart.
