V1. Amara and the Butterfly

Little Listeners (Ages 2-5)

Before You Read 🧐

  • What does it feel like to be sleepy?
  • Have you ever seen a butterfly? What did its wings look like?

Once, there was a little girl named Amara. Her hair, in two curly puffs, bounced when she walked. One sunny afternoon, Amara found the perfect spot for a nap: right under a big, shady tree. 😴

The grass was so soft. The breeze was so gentle. Soon, Amara was fast asleep. And she began to dream.

In her dream, Amara wasn’t a girl anymore! She looked down and saw she had beautiful, shimmery wings. She was a butterfly!

Flutter, flutter went her new wings! They were bright like jewels in the sun.

She danced in the air and floated on the warm breeze. Whee!

She visited a bright red flower. Sip, sip. So sweet! She flew to a sunny yellow flower. Sip, sip. So yummy!

She was a happy, happy butterfly, and she forgot all about being a little girl.

Then… a little wiggle. A little blink. Amara woke up!

She was back on the soft grass. She touched one of her curly puffs. She wiggled her little toes. She was Amara again.

But she remembered her beautiful wings. She remembered sipping sweet flower nectar. A funny thought popped into her head.

After You Read:

  • In her dream, was Amara a girl or a butterfly?
  • When she woke up, what did she wonder?
  • Do you think she was a girl dreaming, or a butterfly dreaming?
