11 Ethnic Studies: What is it?

Jessica Dunker

Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies is the “interdisciplinary field draws on the perspectives of history, sociology, political science, anthropology, and other fields to provide a more complete and nuanced understanding of the experiences of people who have been marginalized because of their race or ethnicity” (Harding).

Understanding Ethnic Studies is an integral part of learning about society as a whole. Learning more about ourselves and our identities is just as important as learning about other people’s experiences too. Ethnic Studies is a field of study in academia, where scholars are increasingly more interested in learning about the contributions and challenges that ethnic minorities have faced in the history in the U.S. and continue to contend with today.
