Book Description: Music, Heritage, and Community is about the use of music, presentations, and XR tools to support anti-racist teaching and to engage the community. This resource features interviews with professional musical artists who work with The Rhapsody Project, a Seattle-based community organization, and it also includes interviews with a Northwest Virtual Reality Specialist about the use of of virtual reality (VR) to teach local Black history. A variety of tools, including non-digital organic tools, online conferencing tools, and extended reality (XR) can further support teaching practices to decolonizing classrooms and be used to build community.

Book Description

Music, Heritage, and Community is about the use of music, XR technology, and presentation to support anti-racist teaching and to engage the community. This resource features interviews with professional musical artists who work with The Rhapsody Project, a Seattle-based community organization. In addition it includes interviews with Dr. Paul Jackson a Northwest VR Specialist, and a case study showing his  use of VR to teach about local Black history.  This book presents the idea that a variety of tools, including non-digital organic tools, online conferencing tools, and extended reality (XR) can support teaching and the building of community. The musician interviews are with Joe Seamons, Liana Green, and Jed Crisologo.

This is an Open Education Resource and it was produced in part at the Bellevue College XR Lab in Bellevue, WA. Photographs include images taken at the Fisher Green Pavilion (sponsored by KBCS, Bellevue College) from the 2023 Seattle Folk Life Festival. The VR Black History demonstration includes content from Dr. Paul Jackson’s 2021 and 2023 presentations to Bellevue College. Dr. Jackson’s presentations were sponsored by the Black Employees of Bellevue College (BEOBC), The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (at Bellevue College),  and the Bellevue College Black Student Union.
