16 POLS&203 International Relations : Service Learning Project
Ted Maloney
Service Learning Project is 30% of your grade, or 300 points.
Objective: You will work on an activity of your choosing that provides a service to the community and gives you a “real life experience” in political or social issues affecting your local community. You may work alone or in a group. [Your project may relate to your Research Project, but that is not required.] You must submit to me a detailed proposal of your activity using the form on the back, and obtain my approval of it. Upon completion of the activity you will:
- submit a 2.5-3 page reflective essay; and
- give a 5-10 minute oral presentation in class with PowerPoint slides (dates to be announced – week 8 or later).
Grading Criteria: Your grade is based on 1) relevance of your content to course social justice topics, 2) evidence of substantial service activity and thought and reflection on what you learned, and 3) quality of writing (including spelling, grammar, punctuation) and oral presentation.
Suggested Activities/Community Group Contacts:
- campus student affinity clubs
- Education presentation on a social justice issue (on campus or in community, e.g., local public schools) – show a film, lecture, etc.
