Part 0: Introduction and Number Systems

The first part of the text introduces place-based number systems through a fictional system called Alphabitia, where letters are used to represent numerical values. Students will learn how this system works for counting and tracking numbers, and they will refer back to Alphabitia throughout the text as they explore basic number operations in greater depth. Because many number operations are already familiar to students, Alphabitia provides a fresh and engaging context for examining these operations more deeply.
