Chapter 17 Knowledge Check

Chapter 17

Quiz yourself using the following chapter review questions to check how well you can recall the material.

Review Questions

  1. Fabrications that can injure or kill in failure, such as bridges, building, pressure piping, and boilers, all require                    welders by law or contract.
  2. True or False: Welding codes and standards are living documents, meaning they are revised and updated on a regular basis.
  3. Which is NOT a good reason to require a fabrication rule or regulation?
    1. Serious injury.
    2. Fatality.
    3. Fabrication failure.
    4. Too easy to fabricate.
  4. In cases where a joint design may lead to a failure, the welding code or standard may put .                     on the size and configuration of the weld joint.
  5. True or False: WABO Standard 27-13 is an aerospace welding standard.
  6. Which state is WABO NOT likely to be used in?
    1. Washington
    2. Florida
    3. Idaho
    4. Oregon
  7. Which color are AWS safety document covers?
    1. Brown
    2. Green
    3. Red
    4. Yellow
  8. Which groove welding position is the horizontal position?
    1. 1G
    2. 2G
    3. 3G
    4. 4G
  9. Which specimen type is NOT a groove weld specimen?
    1. Inclined Bend
    2. Side Bend
    3. Macroetch
    4. Reduced Tension
  10. Which fillet welding position is the overhead position?
    1. 1F
    2. 2F
    3. 3F
    4. 4F

Answer Key

  1. Certified. Welder certification means that you have the welding skills to create a code quality weld.
  2. True. The welding industry is constantly changing with new technology, new alloys, and new filler metals which all require updates to existing welding codes.
  3. Too easy to fabricate. Rules and regulations are put in place to protect the public and workers. Making something more difficult because it is too easy is not a good reason to create and enforce a rule or regulation.
  4. Requirements. Some weld joints are too difficult or impossible to weld. In that case welding codes and standards will prohibit those joint configurations by placing limits on sizes or angles of a weld joint.
  5. False. The WABO Standard 27-13 is for structural welding. This standard is popular in Washington State and its surrounding states.
  6. Florida. WABO was developed for Washington State and is used mainly by neighboring states. Florida is very far away from Washington making it less likely to be used there.
  7. Yellow. Safety documents have yellow document covers.
  8. 2G. The 2G welding position is the horizontal welding position.
  9. Inclined Bend. An inclined bend specimen is not real and not a groove weld specimen.
  10. 4F. The 4F welding position is the overhead position.
