Chapter 19 Knowledge Check
Chapter 19
Quiz yourself using the following chapter review questions to check how well you can recall the material.
Review Questions
- As a welder you will inspect your welds all the time.
- True or False: As part of each welding code, inspection requirements are included to provide inspectors the means to determine if the quality requirements have been met.
- Which discontinuity is NOT intended for VT?
- Overlap
- Tungsten Inclusions
- Cracks
- Spatter
- occurs when gasses produced during welding cannot escape the molten weld pool before it solidifies.
- True or False: Slag is never beneficial to welding except when it isn’t cleaned off of weld beads in between passes.
- Which is NOT a type of crack discussed in the Cracks section?
- Insignificant cracks
- Transverse cracks
- Longitudinal cracks
- Crater cracks
- Why is wearing gloves important when performing PT?
- Makes you look professional.
- Prevents the oils from your skin contaminating the weld.
- Prevents the liquid penetrant from soaking into your skin.
- Prevents the can slipping out of your hand.
- Which piece of equipment is NOT part of MT?
- Iron powder
- Carbon powder
- Yoke
- Puffer bulb
- What will Radiography use when film is not available?
- X-ray tubes
- Film
- IQIs
- Digital sensors
- What does UT use to penetrate the fabrication to test it?
- Light waves
- Sound waves
- Heat pulses
- Ultraviolet light
Answer Key
- Visually. You should visually check every weld as you weld each bead to ensure you are making quality welds and cleaning effectively as required.
- True. Welding inspectors use the inspection requirements listed in the code being used to determine if the weld requirements have been met.
- Tungsten Inclusions. Tungsten inclusions are typically sub-surfaced and not visible by visual inspection of a completed weld.
- Porosity. Porosity is caused by gas trapped in the weld before it solidifies.
- False. Slag is important to welding when it removes impurities from the weld and is cleaned off in between weld passes. If slag is not cleaned and welded over it will weaken the weld.
- Insignificant cracks. All cracks are significant because they tend to get bigger over time leading to failure of the fabrication.
- Prevents the liquid penetrant from soaking into your skin. Gloves should be worn because the PT liquid is very viscous and will easily penetrate your skin which is likely unhealthy. See the SDS for the PT supplies for more information.
- Carbon powder. Carbon powder is not used for MT. It is not magnetic.
- Digital sensors. Once analog film is no longer produced for medical imaging, the inspection industry will move to digital sensors.
- Sound waves. Ultrasonic testing uses sound waves to penetrate the fabrication and provide information about the interior of the material.
