Chapter 20

Quiz yourself using the following chapter review questions to check how well you can recall the material.

Review Questions

  1. The .                 is the main difference between welding, soldering and brazing processes.
  2. True or False: Metals were likely discovered by our ancestors when making fires near stones on sand.
  3. Which welding process was the first welding process used in a large industrial setting?
    1. Whale oil
    2. Oxy-Acetylene
    3. Arc welding
    4. Laser beam welding
  4.                                  is the study of welding metals based upon the chemical and mechanical properties of the weldment after it is completed.
  5. True or False: Ferrous metals are mostly made of iron.
  6. Which process listed is typically used to weld thin metal?
    1. SMAW
    2. FCAW
    3. GMAW-S
    4. SAW
  7. Intergranular attack as shown in Figure 20.21 is commonly known as?
    1. Racing tracks
    2. Wagon tracks
    3. Bike tracks
    4. Car tracks
  8. Which welding process is NOT used for Stainless Steel?
    1. Oxy-Acetylene
    2. SMAW
    3. FCAW
    4. GTAW
  9. What application is NOT typically used for Chrome Moly?
    1. Chain links
    2. Creep resistance
    3. Roll cages
    4. Food prep surfaces
  10. Which is the largest cast iron fabrication in the United States?
    1. U.S. Capitol dome
    2. A 40 inch skillet
    3. A cast iron stove
    4. An engine block

Answer Key

  1. Temperature. The temperature is the main difference between the processes.
  2. True. Fires melted the metal within the stones and the sand provided a contrast making the melt more visible than on top of dirt.
  3. Oxy-Acetylene. Welding history follows the available heat sources. Whale oil was used for lighting but it is not used for welding but gases such as acetylene when combined with oxygen will burn hot enough to weld.
  4. Welding metallurgy. Welding metallurgy is the study of welding metals based on their chemical and mechanical properties throughout the welding and fabrication process.
  5. True. Ferrous metals are mostly made of iron.
  6. GMAW-S. GMAW-S for short circuiting has a lower heat input due to the fact that it is short circuiting and not producing much of an arc.
  7. Wagon tracks. Intergranular attack when it occurs on both sides of a weld bead is more commonly known as wagon tracks.
  8. Oxy-Acetylene. The carbon or soot from Oxy-Acetylene will sensitize the stainless steel resulting in corrosion.
  9. Food prep surfaces. Food preparation surfaces in commercial kitchens typically use stainless steel.
  10. U.S. Capitol dome. The U.S. Capitol dome is the largest cast iron fabrication in the United States weighing more than 8.9 Million pounds.
