  2. True or False: Arc length refers to the distance the electricity travels between the electrode and the workpiece.
  3. What unit measures the “volume” of electricity?
    1. Amps
    2. Watts
    3. Volts
    4. Ohms
  4. True or False: AC is the type of electrical current typically used in household power systems.
  5. True or False: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is also known as TIG welding.
  6. The two manual welding processes that use a constant current power source are .                and .            /TIG
  7. Which type of power source is used for welding with wire feed processes?
    1. Constant Current (CC)
    2. Constant Voltage (CV)
    3. Direct Current (DC)
    4. Alternating Current (AC)
  8. True or False: Transformers can only work with Alternating Current (AC).
  9. What are the main advantages of inverter welders over transformer welders?
    1. Lower cost.
    2. Increased size and weight.
    3. Portability and precision.
    4. Limited settings and options.
  10. True or False: The duty cycle of a welder refers to how long the welding machine can operate continuously before it overheats.

Answer Key

  1. Volt. Volt or voltage is the unit of measurement used to describe electrical force or pressure.
  2. True. The arc length is the distance electricity has to travel between the electrode and the work surface.
  3. Amps. Amperage or Amps is  the unit of measurement used to describe electrical amount or volume.
  4. True. Alternating Current (AC) is the type of current found in most of our household wiring.
  5. True. Many people refer to GTAW as TIG welding, as this is what it was originally called.
  6.  SMAW and GTAW. SMAW and GTAW are manual welding processes that require you to control the arc length and voltage, while the machine keeps a fairly constant current.
  7. Constant Voltage (CV). CV machines are used for semi-automatic wire feed welding processes, such as GMAW and FCAW.
  8. True. AC transformers work through inductance created by a magnetic field generated by alternating current.
  9. Portability and precision. Inverters are smaller and lighter than other types of welders, making them very portable. Their electronics make them very precise in their settings as well.
  10. True. The duty cycle refers to how long a machine can run under full-load non-stop in a 10 minute period.
