    1. Diesel-powered welder generator.
    2. Battery-operated welder.
    3. Solar-powered welder.
    4. Backpack welding torch.
  3. Welders should wear clothing made from                             when working outside in varying weather conditions.
  4. True or False: Working at heights on a construction site requires the use of fall protection, such as harnesses or guardrails.

    1. Crawler crane
    2. Tower crane
    3. Boom truck crane
    4. Lattice crane
  6. True or False: Forklifts with telescoping booms tend to be more complicated to operate than vertical mast warehouse forklifts.
  7. When using battery powered lifts, it is important to plug them in for                           at the end of each day.
  8. Which piece of earthmoving equipment is best suited for digging deep holes with steep sides?

    2. To ensure constant air exchange and avoid hazardous atmosphere.
    3. To provide cooling for equipment.
    4. To improve work visibility.

Answer Key

  1. Ten/10. Despite what many may believe, a small percentage of welders actively work in field construction.
  2. Diesel-powered welder generator. A portable fuel-powered welder often has a built-in generator to power plug-in equipment, as many construction sites do not have electricity.
  3. Cotton/wool/ natural fibers. Natural fibers such as cotton or wool will not melt when exposed to sparks and heat, and wool will keep you warm even when wet with rain.
  4. True. Though you may see others work without the required fall protection, resist the temptation to do the same. It takes only one wrong move to end your career or life.
  5. Boom truck crane. Boom trucks have hydraulically telescoping booms and can travel on the highway.
  6. True. The more features a forklift has, the more complicated the controls are and the more training its use requires.
  7. Recharging. It is important to make sure batteries have a full charge each workday. Charging them regularly ensures they operate at peak capacity.
  8. Excavator. An excavator or track hoe has an articulated arm/boom that can be fitted with a bucket or other digging tools.
  9. To ensure constant air exchange and avoid hazardous atmosphere. Because a ship’s hull is watertight, they are subject to the accumulation of hazardous atmospheres such as argon or other heavier than air gasses.
  10. True. Many independent pipeline contractors must furnish their own welding equipment, usually in the form of a truck with integrated welding and cutting equipment.
