6.7 Continuing Medical Education

Continuing medical education is required of all three EMS professions. Nationally Registered Paramedics (NRP), Nationally Registered EMTs (NREMT) and Nationally Registered Advanced-EMTs (NRAEMT) are required to renew their certification every two years.
The EMT National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) requires a total of 40 hours of continuing education to recertify. The model requires continuing education in three components:
- A national component
- A local/state component
- An individual component
The Advanced-EMT National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) requires a total of 50 hours of continuing education to recertify utilizing the same components as above. While the Paramedic National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) requires a total of 60 hours of continuing education to recertify.
Commonly abbreviated as CME. Continuing education that is required of healthcare professionals to maintain competence and provide education about new and developing areas in their field.
