Cultural Differences Assignment (2023)

John Calavitta

One way I try to address “Difference” is through an international newspaper assignment.

First I teach diversity and its effect on perception and news to this ENGL outcome:

  • Employ basic research and library skills to locate and evaluate information

Thus, I want to tie in the diversity of viewpoints, objectivity, neutrality, and open-mindedness, to good fact-checked journalism, American bias, and national bias, and also Statement bias, selection, and coverage bias.

Short assignment:

Find and read an article from an international newspaper (not American or British) this week, like La Prensa, The Times of India, The South African Times, The Irish Times, etc.

  • What did you notice from this experiment in international newspaper reading? If you already have an international newspaper in your media diet, what have you noticed about these international news sources?
  • What cross-cultural similarities and differences in the news values framing did you see?
  • Which one would be a good place to find an article with an international perspective on a topic?
  • How can reading foreign news sources help to increase your cultural competence, or not?

100-200 words.

Here’s a great site below that compiled international newspapers, by American University:
