Anticipating and Acknowledging the Emotional and Cognitive Components of Social Justice Learning (2022)

Brenda Forsse

The conversations and lessons we facilitate around diversity and social justice could be activating events for students (and potentially ourselves as well). Having the language of comfort zones, learning edges and an understanding of the window of tolerance may help people to communicate instances where they are feeling challenged or stuck. This may also help people maintain an emotionally regulated state required for learning and communicating.

Here is an article that focuses on the Window of Tolerance, which is a concept used to support us in learning about our arousal levels and what feels calm/regulated for us, and what feels out of control or unregulated. It is a powerful tool for promoting regulation and body and brain integration.
