Act Up – A Lesson in A Design Class (2024)

Robynne Raye

Act Up

Create a visual commentary to one of the social issues below via street art. Plan on having your message live in a physical environment. You will work solo, but will also be connected to others in your social issue group through a breakout room. Support each other as you work quickly on your idea by offering feedback and encouragement.

  • Define your Audience
  • Identify the specific location(s) your reaction will live
ie: hanging around the neck of the Fremont Troll or the billboard at 54th and Aurora.
  • Be ready to describe your intended outcome

Don’t overthink this assignment. Go with your gut and work fast (throw out as many ideas as you can then pick one and go with it). A typographical message stapled to a telephone pole can be just as strong as a giant 50′ mural.

1  Urban Sprawl
Urban Sprawl is the unrestricted growth in many urban areas of housing, commercial development, and roads over large expanses of land, with little concern for urban planning. In addition to describing a particular form of urbanization, the term also relates to the social and environmental consequences associated with this development.

2  Hate Speech
Hate Speech is defined as “public speech that expresses hate or encourages violence towards a person or group based on something such as race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation”. Hate speech is “usually thought to include communications of animosity or disparagement of an individual or a group on account of a group characteristic such as race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, or sexual orientation”.

3 Gun Control
Gun Control (or firearms regulation) is the set of laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians, and  refers to domestic regulation of firearm manufacture, trade, possession, use, and transport, specifically with regard to the class of weapons referred to as small arms (revolvers and self-loading pistols, rifles and carbines, assault rifles, submachine guns and light machine guns).

4 LGBTQ+ Rights
LGBTQ+ is an  acronym describing a person who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. LGBTQ RIghts affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people vary greatly by state jurisdiction – encompassing everything from the legal recognition of same-sex marriage to gender neutral bathrooms.

Domestic Violence in United States is a form of violence that occurs within a domestic relationship. Although domestic violence often occurs between partners in the context of an intimate relationship, it may also describe other household violence, such as violence against a child, by a child against a parent or violence between siblings in the same household.
