Project Implicit Assignment

DSJ communication LO: Engage in intentional communication with awareness of intent and impact. Explain different types of knowledge and how knowledge construction maintains power, privilege, and inequity.

Here is an example of a discussion post surrounding implicit bias that I used for my Teaching in a Diverse Society course that I taught in CA. I would like to incorporate some of these assignments into my courses up here as well!

Project Implicit

The Purpose

This assignment will give you an opportunity to discover your own biases by taking a quiz from Project Implict – a non-profit organization aimed at educating the public about hidden biases created by Harvard. This assignment also supports the following course objective:

  • Objective 4 – Reflect on your own values and implicit and explicit biases and the ways in which these may positively and negatively affect teaching and learning.

The How

If you 18 years old or over please:

  1. Head to the Project Implicit Test PageLinks to an external site. and scroll down and click “I wish to proceed”.
  2. Once you have clicked “I wish to proceed”, you should see a page with a list of tests you can take. Here is a visual for that page:

  3. Take one of the tests. You may choose to take any test you would like, but make sure you have 15 uninterrupted minutes to complete the test.
  4. After you take the test, please answer the following questions and submit your answers to Canvas:
    1. Which test did you take?
    2. Did your test results reveal a preference or relative link between the main topics of your test? For example, if you took the Gender-Career test did your results reveal a link between family and females and between career and males?
    3. Based off your results, what did you learn about yourself and your biases?
    4. How can you use the information from your results and apply it to your role as an early childhood educator?
    5. What was your experience like taking the test? Was it uncomfortable? Was it comfortable? Tell me more.
    6. Did you learn something new about yourself? If yes, what did you learn?
  5. Submit your responses to Canvas.

If you are under 18 years old please:

  1. Watch the video.
  2. Answer the following questions:
    1. What associations did you have with the words government, corporate, suburbs, and subsidized housing?
    2. What did you you learn about the implicit bias approach?
    3. How can you use the information from this video and apply it to your role as an early childhood educator?
    4. What was your experience like watching the video? Was it uncomfortable? Was it comfortable? Tell me more.
    5. Did you learn something new about yourself? If yes, what did you learn?

The Grading/ Grade Goals

Your reflective practice (RP) will be scored as “Complete” or “Incomplete.” You will see either a check mark, indicating “Complete” or an “X” indicating “Incomplete.” If “incomplete” I will offer a summary comment that explains the strengths and areas for improvement. You may revise this assignment and resubmit it one time after feedback is provided.

Remember, for Grade Goals, you must pass the following number of education plan assignments:

  • 6/7 for an A
  • 5/7 for a B
  • 4/7 for a C

The Due Date

The encouraged due date is Sunday at 11:59 PM. Ultimately, this has a hard deadline on the Sunday of Week 9 at 11:59 PM.

The Submission

This assignment will be submitted to Canvas. You may submit a video, audio file, document, or text entry answering the questions. Don’t know how to submit assignments via Canvas? No worries! Check out this video below:
