Board of Trustees Address

Address: Brett Willis

Thank you for the work that employees do to support students. Efforts don’t go unnoticed. Pierce enrollment is up, although we are still lower than pre-pandemic values. Next month the Board of Trustees is teaming up with other Boards in the state to meet with our national senators and congress persons.

Growing Together and Flourishing: Progress, Challenges, and Next Steps (10:30 AM)

Main Session Zoom Room

Address by Dr. Julie White

  • Our Marketing Team has been highlighting our students. This All District Day Dr. White reminded us of student, Satima Miller as a way of grounding ourselves in our students, their goals, and our reasons for the work we do.
  • The journey has included a lot of hills (climbs) and valleys.
  • Vacant classified positions: 13% of positions vacant as compared to 25% in January 2023.
  • Administrative/Exempt positions: 13% of positions are vacant, as compared with 33% in January 2023.
  • We appreciate and need people serving on screening committees.
  • BIPOC Employees: Pierce has been increasing our percentage of employees who identify as BIPOC is growing. Compared to the state average, we are about even with the state average. A chart was shared that disaggregated the data.
  • At Employee Recognition Day in May we will celebrate 79 employees with over 900 combined years of service.
  • We are working on data about student success, but we’re still short staffed in our IR team.
  • Completing College Math in the first year data was showed. Pierce average is higher than the system average, but there was a drop off in 2021.
  • Completing college English in the first year, above 60% of students are able to complete college English in the first year. One area that we have to work on is hispanic/Latino students. We are focusing on this area.
  • For students earning 36 credits in their first academic year, shows that Pierce is making success, but we have more work to do for Hispanic/Latino students.
  • Enrollment: Pierce College is up 16% over the previous year. For state supported FTE we are up 3.2% for Running Start we are up 17.8%.
  • Budget: Operating budget $79 Million, Unrestricted reserves are approximately $20 million. We have been drawing from reserves every year since the pandemic to balance the operating budget. We need to keep our reserves healthy. We have been able to return $1.5-$2 million to reserves every year by being good stewards of our budget. To help this, we are projecting some increase in enrollment. (See slides called Goals). We are currently in FY 24. Even with enrollment increase, we will still be pulling from reserves. We are about to go into budget planning season.

Community: Growing Together and Flourishing

  • Personal wellbeing community wellbeing, societal wellbeing (see slide). We are in a rebuilding process.
  • Interaction: Talk to the table about what it means to be in community.
  • Moving from Isolation to Community. Dr. White told a story about what she learned about being in community in putting together a community performance of the Vagina Monologues.. Being an advocate and leader of a Women’s Center in a predominantly white institution (PWI) (university) with mostly male students. Bringing together faculty, staff, students to make a performance. Performing it in ASL and in English.
  • Lessons learned from this event:
    • Common sense of purpose (Mission statement)
    • Divers, inclusive, equitable, accountable communities re required for systems and policy change.
    • Expect resistence
    • LOVE wins: Listen, Observe, Value/Validate, Embrace (LOVE model: Dr. James Lett)
  • Back in breakout discussion: When did you/your team make progress towards a challenging goal? What motivated you to keep going?
    • Breakouts conversations
      • Community isn’t always easy, but center on why we’re here.
      • Give grace: Everyone is doing their best.
      • We spend a huge amount of our day together, so support one another in the work.
  • Next week leadership (Julie, Ilder, and Allison) will be visiting with the Northwest Accreditation Commission on our accreditation.
  • Trends in Higher Education (see slide)
  • Your vision for Pierce College
