Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

White Allies, Advocates, Accomplices, and Activists for Racial Justice ERG Meeting

  • When/Where: Thursday, May 2, 2:00-3:00 p.m.; Zoom
  •  The White Allies, Advocates, Accomplices, and Activists for Racial Justice ERG is geared toward those who identify as white and are interested in building skills in becoming an ally/advocate/accomplice/activist for racial justice; any employee with these interests may attend. This affinity group seeks to build skills and infrastructure to take action to dismantle systemic racism. The May 2nd meeting will take a moment to engage in a survey about what members would like meetings to look like moving forward and will have an open discussion.

Village of Color ERG Meeting

  • When/Where: Monday, May 6, 3:00-4:30 p.m.; Puyallup Campus MPR 102 A and Zoom
  • The Village of Color ERG is a welcoming community where individuals of color come together to support each other and promote diversity on campus. Through authentic conversations and shared experiences, members strive to create an inclusive environment that celebrates our differences and empowers each member. Join this ERG gathering to connect, learn, and contribute to building a stronger, more equitable community.

Women of Color ERG Gathering

  • When/Where: Thursday, May 16, 3:00-4:30 p.m.; Fort Steilacoom Campus CAS371 and Zoom
  • Women of color ERG is hosting its spring gathering to build community via food, shared space and a lot of love! The purpose of WOC ERG is to create a space for women of color to connect, support one another, and discuss relevant topics in an empowering environment.

Trans Awareness Learning Session

  • In this learning session we will explore cisnormativity and cisgender privilege, as well as key language and terminology of the transgender movement. Participants will identify their personal relationship to gender and learn about the importance of pronouns. Recording

Queer ERG Meeting

  • When/Where: Wednesday, May 22, 3:00-4:00 p.m.; Zoom
  • The Queer ERG is an inclusive space for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals to share experiences, provide support, and foster an inclusive environment. Members aim to build community, promote understanding, and advocate for an equitable and welcoming environment. Join this ERG gathering to build community, celebrate diversity, and work towards a more inclusive campus for all.

2024 DEI Empowerment Conference

  • When/Where: June 5th, June 6th, June 11th and June 12th
  • The WA State 2024 DEI Empowerment Conference aims to help state government build more just systems, and foster a culture of inclusion and belonging with our state workforce. Sessions will highlight the lived experience of historically marginalized groups and ideas for creating inclusive Washington communities and workplaces.

Arab American Heritage Month Resource Library

  • When/Where: Bridge Session -Self-Guided
  • This self-guided walkthrough of Arab American Heritage Month recognizes the achievements of Arab Americans. Across the country, cultural institutions, school districts, municipalities, state legislatures, public servants, and non-profit organizations issue proclamations and engage in special events celebrating the Arab American community’s rich heritage and numerous contributions to society and our communities.

Inclusive Practices

ELAD and Extended Learning: Opportunities to get involved at the Special Commitment Center

  • When/Where: April 18, 3-4 pm; FS CAS 369 and online via Zoom (Register via Bridge)
  • Facilitator: Gabby Hickok
  • Join ELAD and Extended Learning in an information session about the Special Commitment Center. The Special Commitment Center is part of the specialized programs in collaboration with the state Department of Social and Health Services. It assists residents with their treatment and reintegration to the community. Residents have the option to pursue Adult Basic Education, High School Diploma/GED, and Computer Applications programs at the state’s Special Commitment Center.

Achieving the Dream: Revolutionize Your Teaching: Implementing AI in Your Classroom Workshop

  • When/Where: Thursday, April 18, 2024, 1:00–5:00 p.m. ET., Virtually
  • Explore the dynamic role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reshaping the future of higher education with this four-hour virtual workshop by Achieving the Dream. Harnessing Hypothes.is, Pt. 2: Faculty Roundtable Discussion

  • When/Where: Tuesday, April 23, 1:00 – 2:00 PM, via Zoom
  • Join this session to listen to and converse with faculty about how they use Hypothesis. This roundtable discussion incorporates questions that relate to student engagement, technical skills used, and the opportunity to create a community of practice for Hypothesis users at all levels. Led by Hypothes.is representative Christie DeCarolis and Pierce College faculty using Hypothes.is, this session once again aims to provide insight into Hypothes.is and its application within the Pierce College classroom environment.

AnnotatED Virtual Conference

  • When/Where: April 17-18, 9:00-Noon, Online
  • Hypothes.is, a social annotation educational technology tool, is hosting this FREE online conference. “At this conference, attendees will hear from social annotation experts at over 16 different live sessions on how to incorporate social annotation into the classroom. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with the presenters and other attendees in real-time.”

Hypothesis Academy: Social Annotation 101

  • When/Where: April 16-30, 2024, Online, This is a virtual, facilitated online class. Registration is free to Pierce College Employees.
  • Hypothesis Academy: Social Annotation 101 is a two-week course designed to teach you not only how to use the Hypothesis tool, but how to design social annotation assignments to best support your students’ learning. By the end of the course, you’ll have set up a Hypothesis-enabled assignment in your course site, complete with instructions for your students and a grading plan. If you complete all of the required components of the course, you’ll also receive recognition as a Hypothesis Certified Educator for the course Social Annotation 101. This includes a digital certificate (which can easily be shared to your social media pages or downloaded and saved to a portfolio) and recognition on our website.

IP for Everyone: Conversation for Capacity Building

  • When/Where: April 24, 3-4 pm; Fort Steilacoom CAS 531
  • Join Yubi Lojewski and Azaria Evans for a conversation for capacity building to implement Inclusive Practices in everyday work. This session centers the experience of staff and invites brave conversations about our collective needs in addition to creating an inclusive space for students.

  • Join Penda Samba, Cindy Schaarschmidt, and Liu Yang for an interactive session on cultural humility. This session delves into the concept of cultural humility, as a fundamental approach to effectively engaging with diverse cultures. Participants will explore the multi-dimensional aspects of cultural humility, including the recognition and challenge of power imbalances, the importance of lifelong learning and critical self-reflection, and the commitment to mitigating systemic inequities.

Unlocking Authentic Communication in a Culturally Diverse Workplace

  • When/Where: Bridge Session – Self-Guided
  • From the Course Description: “What does it take to be a great communicator, particularly in a global and culturally diverse modern workplace? The answer is largely authenticity. In this course, Jonathan Wilson teaches key principles of authentic communication, real-world tips for practicing authentic communication, and how to develop cultural awareness so you can build relationships, support colleagues from underrepresented groups, and be a more effective professional. Jonathan explores what it means to be authentic in a way that celebrates who you are, resonates with others, highlights the importance of cultural differences, and energizes those around you. It may take a while and some work to attain competence and expertise in these areas, but if you’re looking to be someone who can connect with anybody with ease, navigate tricky conversations, and learn what matters to people, join Jonathan in this course.”

Starfish Degree Planner Demystified

  • One of the most useful, but least understood aspects of Starfish is Degree Planner. Many folks know how to build a Degree Plan, but not everyone knows why and how the plans build, as well as how to create conditions to assist your students. This session will cover the basics of how Degree Planner works and how to utilize all of its many wonderful features.

Managing Projects with Microsoft Teams

  • When/Where: Bridge Session – Self-Guided
  • From the course description: “Microsoft Teams is the communication and teamwork hub of Microsoft 365. Teams brings together the conversations, files, and meetings that team members collaborate on together—making it an ideal tool for managing projects. In this course, Microsoft Certified Trainer, Microsoft MVP, and project manager Heather Severino walks through everything you need to know to manage small- to medium-sized projects in Teams. Heather starts by showing how to set up a team and manage permissions. She then covers how to manage files, connect SharePoint lists and pages, take notes, manage online meetings, and collect project feedback. Plus, Heather explains how to be even more efficient in Teams by using keyboard shortcuts and leveraging existing teams as templates.”

An Introduction to Pierce College’s Faculty-Focused Tableau Data Dashboards

  • When/Where: Thursday, May 23, 1-2:30pm; Zoom
  • Since 2015, Pierce College has used the data visualization tool Tableau to support institutional data democratization. Pierce College Tableau users can access a variety of data dashboards that support our work in mission fulfillment. Please join us for a virtual 90-minute workshop focusing on the Course Analysis for Faculty Development and Career Pathway Map Headcount & Demographics dashboards, as well as various Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) dashboards. We will focus on the functions of and potential uses for the Course Analysis for Faculty Development and Career Pathway Headcount & Demographics dashboards. We will also discuss how to navigate some of the nuances of these dashboards and their limitations. The aim of this workshop is not to generate a wish list of dashboards to be created or revived. We are in the midst of shifting data tools and do not have the capacity to build new or restore inactive or outdated dashboards at this time.
